It depends how the starter moter has failed
I would suggest that as most modern starters don't have the pinion fly into the flywheel ring gear that is PROBABLY OK and thus so should be the clutch

Hi Richard thanks for your reply. I am being told that the starter motor has failed and as such has damaged the fly wheel in the clutch housing. I was told initially that the fly wheel had failed and had damaged the starter motor, I just dont know who to trust.

I would think the only thing the starter motor could break would be the gear ring on the edge of the flywheel. This is usually made from a lot stronger stuff than the starter motor pinion gear. I would be tempted to just install a new starter and listen to what it sounds like when starting.
Not too sure about the flywheel failing some older VWs did have probs with a dualmass flywheel not sure if the cmax has one though. If the gear ring on the flywheel failed this could possibly damage the starter but the car wouldnt start when you got to the area where the teeth were missing. Hope some or all of this helps
