Just bought late 2007 tdciimpresed with its performance and will be checking its mpg carefully for th next few weeks
I know there are 1.6 and 2ltre variants about but wonder how many people own or prefer1.8 rather than the others ?

depends what's available at what price when you come to buy if not buying new.

Wed decided against the 2.0 when I got out 1.6 because of fleet reports about nobody ever getting the claimed MPG out of any Ford 2.0L diesel

I'd have preferred a 1.6 compared with my 1.8 TDCi. The 1.8 is a much less refined engine, plus the MPG is nowhere near as good around town as the 1.6.

The only reason I've got a 1.8 is that the 1.6's were in very short supply when I bought my car.

actually, 1.8 is not a real TDCI engine :)

TDCI engines are 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 . all of them were developed by Ford togheter with PSA(peugeot + citroen).

the 1.8 "tdci" is actually a 1.8 tddi (Endura-D) upgraded with a variable-vane turbocharger and a Delphi common rail injection system.

I've tried all of them (I had 1.4 on a Fiesta, I have 2.0 on Cmax and I've tried 1.6(both 90 and 109 hp) and 1.8 on the romanian ford club meetings) and I think that 1.8 has more noise and trepidations, compared to the "real" TDCIs

I decided I wanted the 2.0 TDCI straight away.Nothing against the 1.8 but,the 2.0 had the power/econ I wanted & It`s a proven Pug design.Pug have up to now got the best diesels,although VW/Audi & BMW are cattching up V V quickly.

the 1.9 Pug unit used to be the best diesel around back in the early 80's because it had such a flat torque curve over such a large engine rev range
