Today I reset the MPG calculator and droveapprox 40 miles at 50- 55 mph on average in 6th on a dual carriageway and got a reading of 70 mpg in my 2.0 TDCI.
As soon as I came off the dual carriageway back in town again it started to go down!!

i'm guessing because its such a heavy car for such a small ltr.
on motorway when i drive down to london i only get about 30 ish on the motorway

I've had some MPG issues with my 1.8TDCi recently. It seems to have dropped about 10mpg both around town and on motorways.

However, I've just done a 200 mile trip, and I'd decided to take it easy. I drove around 55mph most of the way, and achieved 64.9mpg, which matches the best I've managed to get out of it before (in similar circumstances).

It's nice to be able to get 200 miles out of the car and have the fuel gauge only show 1/4 of a tank used.

Hi

My 1600 tdci has a peculiar problem with economy.

If I reset the computer and do a 15 mile trip to work the computer will show about 65mpg at the end of the trip.

I can park the car for eight hours and on returning if you check the computer again, without starting the engine the consumption will have dropped to about 50 mpg. It lost 15 mpg when parked.

Similarly if you get a low initial economy, i.e short trip the mpg never recovers even if you did 100 miles at 55mph

Strange things computers!!

After having done about 1000 mixed (commuting + motorway at limit)miles in the month since we has our 1.6 TDCi we appear to have been achiving a regular 50 MPG based on having to use the same pump and brain power

Get equally abysmal consumption on my 1.6 Petrol, but have eased the problem (in one way) by using BP's expensive top grade fuel. It costs about 10% more
but gives about 10% better consumption
. Still costs the same per mile, but at least gives a decent range in the tank.

Hi folks I regularly do mixed miles motorway and short work journey ( 12 miles) with the mix I regularly get 44+ over the month.

On a long trip 60mph-70mph it returns between 48 -52, usually set cruise control and let the car take the strain.

04 2.0l TDCI Ghia. great driving car as well.

I have just put on 2 Bridgstones to replace the front tyres (Continentals)and they seem a little noisy, anyone else found this or is it my imagination?

Hi folks, picked up my 05 2.0 tdci ghia 38260mls yesterday.  Really wanted to get all excited but anxious about MPG.  I reset the comp. trip before leaving the garage and drove 12 miles home.  This was B roads mostly and fairly flat.  I didn't put my foot down even tho' I know there is more than enough power!  First thing I did was check mpg reading and it showed a **** miserable 29.7
.  Hubby came home from work and we then drove another 25 miles, again on good B roads and mpg reading was 35.5.  This is worrying me so much I can't appreciate everything else about this car.  Today I drove another 40 miles inc. dual carriageway and now mpg is reading 41.7.  I think this is still miserable especially when our first diesel was a 2.0ltr Picasso which regularly returned 50+mpg.  I am led to believe this is a very similar pugeot designed engine in this Cmax so if the French can get good fuel economy, why can't Ford?!

I did brim it at the filling station incase the trip comp. is faulty.  So far I have travelled 107.5 miles and the guage is showing 1/4 empty already.  Think this may have to go but I can't afford to lose cash on it.  One of the reasons for changing was economy but it is far worse than my A3 Audi

The clock also loses 5 mins in half a day.

Would be grateful for any thoughts/suggestions.

Thanks
Margaret

Are you sure the gauge is reading accurate rather than the fuel consumption being poor? It is about a 12 gallon tank so ¼ empty for just over 100 miles would equate to about 35 MPG

Give it say another 100 miles and then see if it only takes about the 4 to 5 gallons to fill it back up (200 mils would mean 50 MPG for 4 gallons and 40 MPG for 5 gallons)

Hi Richard, thanks for reply and advice.

I, maybe ignorantly, always  believed without doubt that the mpg reading on my Audi was accurate.  However I am having doubts since it was explained that different manufacturers compute the mpg differently.  I am not sure how each manufacturer calculates mpg so on that basis maybe the one on the cmax isn't 100% accurate.  I'll post on here when I have refilled the tank.

Thanks again
Margaret

Hi all, as promised I have some figures from my 2.0lltr TDi.  Just come back from Tesco where I brimmed fuel again.  This time I have travelled 197.4 miles averaging 25mph and filled up 19.19ltrs @ £1.219 = £23.40.
Worked this out to be 46mpg
.  Happy with that considering how much bigger the Cmax is compared to my A3 Audi!

An easy little aide memoire on the MPG calculations

If the distance you've travelled is TEN TIMES the amount of fuel you put in then you've averaged 45.4 MPG if you get to ELEVEN times then that is just about 50 MPG

I thought my MPG was bad, I am getting around 32MPG in my 1.8 Ghia petrol (120BHP). I live in the countryside so lots of varied speeds & hills. If I drive it carefully I can achieve around 36. When I fill it up with BP fuel it runs like a dog, even tried super in it but no better performance or economy. I have found Esso & Morrisons to be the best fuels for my C-Max.

Well, back from the hols and boy what a week!
Apart from a slight EGR (?) problem that came and went within a hour or so, the CMax just stormed along.

So, 780 miles in total with mostly motorway driving = Nearly 49 MPG!
Still have over a 1/4 tank left, as I filled up prior to leaving. This one very powerful and smooth car that we have ever owned.

PS price of diesel in Yorkshire varied, the cheapest being 124.9 while the most being 134.9
