Considering getting K+N panel filter for 2.0 TDCI, have been for some time, but at over£40 from Hallifordsit's expensive. Interested in your comments regarding m.p.g. Where did you buy from?

I got one today for my 1.8 petrol Ghia, £26 Inc P&P from Ebay - what a bargain. Took the car for a quick spin, sounds quieter & seems to run alot more smoothly. The old filter was well grubby though!

I have done around 500 miles now since fitting & mpg is up to 45 round town from 38.Definately better response when speed called for.

I fitted one of these filters to my 1.8 petrol (2007) a few months ago. Cost me £35. This has made no difference at all to the running or fuel consumption, which still averages around 33.5, according to the computer. Don't waste your money!

I must agree with revesby. I fitted a k&n air filter to my car a few months ago and it has made no difference what so ever to fuel consumption or power it has made no difference what so ever to my car. The only upside to the filter is i never have to buy one againd but apart from that there a waste of money.

The power increase is between 5 & 8 bhp on most cars.Mines going in for service & mot soon then I`m gonna put it on a rolling road & get a check of all out puts.This should give an idea of improvements/nothing.I`ll keep you all posted.

I have ordered one of these, not K&N but the Jetex variety. Looks like recommendations for these replacement filters are mixed, but I'll give one a go and report back with any improvements in performance, or otherwise.

What I can't find on the web are instructions on how exactly to clean this sort of panel filter, and how often they need to be cleaned. There are instructions for other sorts of cloth filters but not the panel type. Some people elsewhere suggest cleaning every 5,000 miles, others 10,000, whilst the guy in the shop said every 30,000 miles. I should be grateful if someone here could give me some advice, or let me know of a definitive guide on the web.

This place reckons every 50Kfor normal road use.

The performance and MPG figures probably differ depending on what car they are fitted to and I suppose the performance of the engine.

I know that modern engines are never set up properly as the ECU chips tend to be set to a standard spec, but this by no means gets the best out of the engine.

People tell me a session on a dyno or preferrably a rolling road and getting the ECU set up properly will work wonders.

So I might have to get my 2 litre petrol set up properly in standard form, then fit one of the panel filters and see what (if any) improvement that will give.

Thanks for the link, Roy. I've bookmarked it. I think my 1.6 petrol is going very well, and has definitely improved markedly following a PCM update which reduced my rpm considerably and therefore also increased my combined mpg figure from 30-33 to 37. It will be interesting to see if the new filter will improve things further. Even if there is only a marginal improvement, one doesn't have to buy a new paper filter each year, and a cloth filter should therefore pay for itself in 3 years.

I have now fitted a Jetex filter into my car for about a week, so, time for first impressions. The filter has made no difference to the revs, and I am still getting 3750rpm at 80mph. I feel, however [I have no evidence for this], that the car is somewhat more sprightly and accelerates better, particularly in 5th beyond 60mph. The improvement in airflow may, therefore, have increased torque, or, put another way, has very slightly increased my HP. I have not refilled my tank yet, and cannot, therefore, comment on MPG.

I came across an interesting Air Filtration Test on http://bobistheoilguy.com which seems to put speculation about the claimed advantages of cotton filters to bed. Looks like I will be replacing mine with a standard paper filter come my next service, as I would rather have a cleaner engine than a very slight improvement in performance. Ho hum.

I had a k&Nair filter in my car WASTE OF MONEY. I have now sold it and put a normal filter back in total waste of money.
