It's variable. I get less than 30mpg on short trips around town. (I do live in a very hilly area though, which will affect the economy).

On my work trip ( 35 miles mixed motoring ) I get around 45mpg at max 70mph. I have had up to 55mpg at those speeds, but not recently.

On long journeys I can get 65mpg if I drive like a granny and stay around 55-60mph.

Over the last year the economy has got worse by about 5-10mpg, but the dealer says the car is fine.

It's an 06 model TDCi Zetec.

The engine itself is a great motorway cruiser, and great at climbing hills. Very, very noisy while it's cold though, and sounds very diesel like in low speed motoring, unlike the 1.6 and 2.0 models.

You do have to change down gear if it's a very steep hill. Where I live there's a very, very steep hill, but provided I don't have to stop at the bottom I can drive up in third gear.

My old Escort 1.3 petrol had to go up the same hill in 1st gear, 2nd if I was lucky, and then only at really high revs.

Had cmax 1.8 diesel for two years now and get around 52mpg around town, 64mpg on the local a roads, A1, and last week got 74mpg going from wigan to glasgow.

to quote Terry Wogan on his top gear lap

"Steady and slow wins the day"

Best from full tank =716 miles until fuel light came on.

Last week I kept it to 60mph on the motorway part of my 35 mile commute and got approx 56mpg over a single tankful of fuel. Bear in mind that the motorway part is only about 1/2 of the total trip.

I realised recently that one reason my MPG was getting worse was that I was accelerating faster, and changing up at higher revs than when I first got the car. I now try to change up at 2000, except when I occasionally need to put my foot down to overtake, and the MPG has gone back to its previous level.

I'm averaging 42 MPG from a mix of motorway & town driving. (08 Plate)

Not too impressed because my 02 plate 1.8 tdci Focus averaged 52 over a 5 year period doing the same journey.

Long motorway trip, I managed to get 53.4 but that was driving like a granny.

Somehow I don't think I'll be keeping this one as long as my old Focus!

About 4 week ago I went from Stockport to Hull which was almost all motorway. The car was unladen with just myself and my 8 yr old son. I set the trip computer before leaving home and kept to 55mph almost all the way. When I got back home I checked the mpg and was gobsmacked as it said I got 68.1 mpg...........well chuffed
