Cmax - Buying help!!

Hi,

I am looking at purchasing a c-max, auto diesel, roughly 2004 plate. I've currently an Merc A-class & want something a little larger, 2 children, buggies & bits etc!!

I have done a little research & am aware of the auto gearbox issue on the 1.6 diesel before 50k.

Could anyone therefore advise me;
1) were they all recalled & therefore if anyone has had this done i am assuming you were given certification to prove so?
2) at what age were they fixed at factory level & therefore now without the problem?

Any other advice would also be appreciated.

Many thanks!

  1. They were never recalled and fixed as Ford / ZF never made any of the parts available
  2. Never fixed at factory level except that they were discontinued and with it went any interest by Ford in fixing the previous problems
All the 1.6 Diesel with the CVT semi auto box (CFT 23) are prone to the complete failure requiring in most cases a 4,000 gearbox swap

Laurie, learn from my mistake ... I originally bought a 1.6tdci, loved the car but ended up being very frustrated by the engine which is gutless when loaded with baby gubbins etc.
I part-exchanged my 1.6 tdci for a 2.0tdci within 3 months, it's far more relaxing to drive and makes light work of roads like Porlock Hill and Lynton Hill. In the 1.6tdci these hills were a bit hairy ...

The more I hear about people finding the 1.6 gutless the more I believe that these have turbo problems with the variable vanes stuck in the high speed mode due to build up of carbon

We came back the other week from Hillingdon with a whole kitchen set of cabinets in the back with the rear seats folded and had no problems with still getting over 50 MPG at motorway speed

When trying a 1.6 diesel you ought to be able to change up at no more than 1750 rpm and make very rapid progress

Thanks for the advice Richard!

Could you tell me whether all the autos have the same gearbox problem or just the 1.6's??
I've back issues & have had autos for years & am hoping your answer to be, yes 1.6's only & 2tdci's are reported to be fine?!

I don't know of any issues with any auto gearbox except the CVT (CFT 23) that was fitted to the 1.6 diesel
