Hi all,
I'm Kev from Surrey and found your site whilst trying to solve a problem with my 2004 2.0 TDCI Ghia. So here is the problem. Driving back home yesterday I got the message to top up the windscreen washer bottle, so after arriving home I lifted the bonnet to fill the washer bottle, when I noticed that the oil filler cap was missing. The last time the bonnet was raised was back in March when the car was serviced and Moted. There was no sign of oil escaping through the uncapped hole, the oil level was OK and no sign of the cap in the engine compartment. I phoned my local garage and was told that it wouldn't have been left off during the service but I have never heard of an oil cap becoming loose. I was going to take my car to the garage this morning but after 5ft it stopped and would not start again. I have been told that a missing oil cap wouldn't stop the car from starting so it must be a coincidence. has anyone come across this problem before....cheers

Welcome.
I am surprised that the engine bay wasn'tcovered with oil spray if the cap had been missing since March, also that the oil level was okay.
Any other clues ?

Yes, I couldn't understand it either, but the nice man from the RAC spent 10 minutes looking for it in the engine compartment with a torch and a mirror on the end of wand. He said that he had never heard of an oil filler cap coming off or working loose, so suspects that it was never put back in the first place. I asked about the lack of oil splash in the engine compartment and he told me that only vapor would escape and some other technical stuff that I just nodded to.

He then told me to start the engine but again it only turned but didn't fire, he then told me to put the accelerator pedal to the floor and turn the engine again. This time the engine fired up with a huge white cloud of smoke coming out of the back, it was miss firing at first but soon firing as normal.
He then connected his laptop to the car and found that the E.G.R control circuit high and the E.G.R valve frozen, I took this information to Ford and was told that it would cost 348 to put right. My new oil cap cost just under a tenner....

Hi & welcome to the club,
I too have never heard of an oil cap coming off, although I have seen an engine that had blown the head off.
As to the egr,I suppose 348 is the going rate now,I had mine done this time last year for 310

Is it a common problem this E.G.R? it's just that my wife reminded me that she had to call out the RAC about two years ago with the same problem, although he didn't put his laptop to the car and Ford couldn't find any faults when I took it to the garage.... It did start up with a cloud of white smoke she tells me..
