Hello everyone. Had my 1.8l petrolZetec for a couple of months now and overall I'm quite happy with it apart from one thing which is bugging me which is fuel consumption, my trip computer is only registering 19mpg and by the way the fuel gauge goes down I think its right. Other than that it runs ok. I wanted a diesel but couldn't find one for love nor money around here. Edited by: southgate

I don't think the sender is sticking as the gauge goes down smoothly from full to empty but thanks for the suggestion.

Hi & welcome Southgate

Living just north of you I know how hard it is to find the car you want, took ages to find mine. A lot of people complain about the 1.8s mpg the 2.0 Tdci is much more economical and has loads of torque,

should be getting about 33 averagempg with a mixture of urban and out of town cruising-only slightly lower in in colder weather.

In theory you should get better mpg in cold weather as the air is denser and you get more power from your engine

yes but the engine also takes longer to reach normal operating tempso will usemore fuel on short runs.

Also, with regard to denser air, it'll chuck more fuel in to keep with emissions, knowing how much airmass and the air Temperatureit knows the air's density and fuels accordingly with an offset built into the Cal.
Generally speaking, Engines use more fuel on shorter trips in the cold due to the need to warm up and increased loads put on the Engine.
