Hi looby and welcome.

As for your fault, this happened to us two Sundays ago. You have a dead and failed battery
You could charge it but you are only putting off what will be needed in a couple of days.
Our one managed to last the winter but 5 years use of the battery is very good.
Downside was the cost. The car is needed all the time as my wife is a care worker and of course the only place open on a Sunday is Halfords.
120 later one beefed up battery fitted, though I did it myself rather than Halfords do it.
Still since fitting a stronger crank battery, the car performs better... weird!

Get the battery tested first and see what they say. As you say small runs is not good for any car, even more so for a diesel.
A quick fix if the battery is ok is this:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?...FRuZ2Aodl1oOZg
Cost is 10 and this will at least help keep the battery topped up.
I bought this when my wife had a corsa which was not used a lot but helped keep the battery in form.
Good luck either way!

Not used it with the Max but was used when we had the Corsa and seemed to work very well even in today's cloudy light.
