Hi there ...

I recently decided that a Focus C-Max would be a good buy for me after endless pondering of what car to get. My aim is to get one before I go on holiday (by car) to Scotland on March 27th.

I don't have a family (just a girlfriend), and thought the C-Max would be good because of the space. I play in a band so it will be handy for moving gear around in fairly regularly and I've read that it's a people carrier for people who don't want a people carrier! Seems perfect.

I currently have a T-reg Corsa (42k on clock and in good nick) to trade in. I can't afford new car so no scrapage, so I'm looking at either a 1.6 TDCi Zetec or Ghia, probably 04/05, hopefully around 50k or less if possible.

I must admit I've read a **** of a lot of horror stories, and not sure if I should change my mind!

Can anyone give any tips for finding one that won't go wrong? Ford dealerships are a lot more expensive than what I can find on Autotrader, but then I won't get the same warranty.

Any help muchly appreciated ...

I have a 54 LX 1.6 TDCI so I think they are powerful enough to get just about anywhere normal
You ought to
Aim to go more towards the 05 than the 04
Avoid at just about all costs the autogarbox (CVT)
Avoid if possible the electric handbrake unless you need it
A heated front screen is an option on the LX (as per ours) and it is a very useful extra
It may also be valid to consider just what exta's from the higher spec's you would really benefit from as against just paying for thehigher spec vehicle
Check the small print of any warranty and get confirmed any reasons for exclusions such as having to have it serviced by the dealer

Hi Mike,welcome to the site.
I totally agree with Richard, especially about the handbrake.
I`d go for the Zetec.I`ve got a 2.0TDCI Zetec & it`s great.

I have a 04 focus c max ghia.

I have had one issue with the EPB that resulted in alot of warning lights coming on and also alot of new parts were needed.

This was down to the fact I needed a new battery nothing more.

I would not worry about the EPB at all to be honest.

I see endless comments about how you should avoid it because it goes wrong all the time.

To be very honest the EPB has been the least of my worrys as the car in general has provern to be very unreliable to date.

I belive any car can go wrong at any time so I am not putting a downer on the car at all.

I read a while back a comment from a member who saied no one puts anything about problems there not having on here.

Well here goes I dont have an issue with my EPB at all

Likewise with the EPB. I have had my 04 2.0 TDCI Ghia for just under a year now and have had no issues at all with the EPB.

Apart from the boot switch corroding (seems to have happened a lot recently) there have been no issues at all.

It's been a pleasure to drive, and still puts a smile on my face when I floor it in 6th on the motorway and it rockets forward!

From my experience don't go near a C-Max. I've got an 04 plate 1.8 ghia with 28k mileson the clock and it continually breaks down.

Problems withmy C-MAX.

Gets through brake pads every 9000 miles. Ford say this is due to a heavy right foot. I've got 2 other cars that do the same mileage and the have still got plenty after 30k miles.

Air Con Compressor failure - 600 at 15k miles (air conn still leaks)
EPB module failure - 750 at 28k miles
Power Assist Failure - 750 at 28k miles

This car is for my wife to transport our child and friends/ children. She now refuses to drive it becouse it is dangerous.

The parking brake left her stranded with child in the middle of nowhere unable to unlock it.

The power steering failed whilst driving with child. (Could have caused a serious accident).

This a a poorly designed cheaply constructed vehicle compared to other ford I have owned/own

Crikey - no strong feelings on the matter then, I can feel the hackles rising as people read that last post from Cosworth

Personally I think it's a great car, sure it has it's problems like any other. It's the first car I've ever owned that has properly broken-down on the side of the road for example. But I still think it's great to drive, with lots of space, it looks good, the 2L tdci engine goes like stink, the list goes on.

I guess we can only judge from our own experience, I'm certainly still a fan.
