Hi all, hope someone can help or at least point me in the right direction... I have a 54 plate Ford C-Max Zetec 2.0 tdci approx 40k miles. Recently it has been a little hesitant to start, in that it will fire, judder a little then cut out but always starts fine on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. However, today it started first time but would not accelerate, in fact if i pressed the accelerator it would cut out, i also noticed that it was kicking out a cloud of smoke from the exhaust on starting, there was also a noticeable slight smell of burning! Now the car will not start at all unless i press the accelerator but then cuts out a after a short while. Any ideas / help appreciated !

Hi Mark
Don't know if it helps but my C-Max doesn't respond tp the accelerator pedal for about one minute when starting in cold weather when both the heated screens switch onplus the air conditioning to clear the screen. The electrical load plus the alternator trying to recharge the battery maybe reduces the voltage to the engine management unit.
If I press the accelerator heavily, the engine stutters but will then rev up, suddenly. (kangaroo petrol syndrome!)

The accelerator is fly by wire in that there is no direct connection to any fuel change
and pressing it probably doesn't have the effect you think it does I suspect the variable resistor on the top of the accelerator pedal that recognise pedal movement is a place to start the investigation.
I'm not certain what the exact effect of a broken resistance track is on difficulties with starting
