Hi guys

Im looking at buying a 2007 Cmax(new shape).
Im looking for some advise.

I been looking at the 2L auto petrol zetec.

What are your thoughts with the petrol engines 1.6 1.8 or 2L
1.6 seemed a bit under powered and the 1.8 is more expensive than a 2L.
A bit confused,so pros and cons please.

Thanks

Hello, welcome to the club.
First up, I am sure theconsensus on the site would be to go for a diesel and not a petrol, but not an early diesel, so post 2006. Second, the 1.8 petrol seems to be thirsty, whilst the 1.6 is apparently underpowered . Lastly, do not buy a variable automatic transmission - it's nothing but trouble. So, that seems to leave the manual 2.0 petrol, if petrol it is.
Of course it's horses for courses. I really like my 1.6 petrol. It goes plenty well for me, costs me almost nothing to buy, hasn't cost me anything to maintain and does everything I want of it at a reasonable MPG. But if you do a lot of mileage and even more motorway driving then you should be looking for a 2.0 diesel. If you're looking for probably the best all rounder, then go for the 1.6 diesel. Ok, matey.

I should just point out that the 1.6 Diesel will still put up a good show at "Motorway limit" return around 50 - 55 MPG and with the 129g CO2 variant only cost 90 per year VED
I'd echo the comments about the CVT auto gearbox
The later Euro IV spec (they have "V" in bottom left of VIN plate) have a an expensive service item at the 75,000 mile mark

Thanks guys

So did Ford not fix the problem when they brought out the new shape in 2007?
Are there 2 kinds of autos or are they all cvt?

I would prfer a manual anyway but was lured to the cheap 2L autos on autotrader.

I'm fairly certain that the CVT was only with the 1.6 Diesel and not the 2L because of the torque output limits (and that appears to be another story in itself)

I would choose eitherthe 1.6 or 1.8 diesel(I've had both). It's a close call, just depends on whether you wanta bit ofextra nip or a fewextra MPG - with the 1.8I'm currently getting about 41mpg but this can easily rise to over 50 on longer trips.

Hello,

We have a 1.8 petrol,we dont do massive miles to warrant a diesel. Ours is returning about 28 - 31mpg and thats with the aicon on etc, It goes up when on a longer run.#
