Hello,
Can any one help me I have a whinning/Humming noise coming from the engine (2ltr TDCi)as soon as its started it dosent change with engine speed/load etc.
The noise stops after the engine is switched off it sounds like a fan slowing down.
Is this the diesel pump whine that I have heard of?
Regards Steve.

Could it be the alternator, they start making a noise before they fail. How many miles have you done?

That was one of my thoughts but because the noise dosent change with speed of engine and it stops like a fan slowing down after engine has been stopped, my train of thought moved away from the Alternator right or wrong I am not 100% sure.
The car has covered under 50K.
Thanks Regards Steve

PAS Pump? A/C fan? Near impossible to diagnose without hearing it.

As you look at the car, does the noise come from low down on the left side of the engine? If so I agree with Shaz that it`s the alt.

If the noise continues after the engine has stopped it rules out anything directly driven off the engine cant you get someone to stop the engine while you listen under the bonnet to find out where its coming from? could it be the Turbo running down or as Kevmond suggests the A/C fan

Took a look at the car this morning, didnt realise the car has a Electric pump for the power stearing (Electro-Hydraulic power strearing or EHPS for short) found it under the head light, disconected the power supply to it and started the car no humming and when the engine was switched off no humming. The coolingfan wasnt running and the alternator had stopped but the whinning could still be heard.
Thanks Regards Steve.

How warm had you got the engine?
Could it be air under pressure escaping past the cooling system pressure cap that is getting old

Thanks, i hadnt thought of that but the noise is there straight away whether the car is cold or warm. Have you had any problems with a electric power steering pump?
Thanks Regards Steve
