I am using a 2010 2.0TDCI for towing our caravan, 1200kgs, the car seems to tow the van at 1500 to 1750rpm in 6<SUP>th</SUP> with no problems and can easily cope with most motorway hills. Cruise control is also used. Is this sort of use likely to strain the engine / clutch? Or would I be better using higher revs and 5<SUP>th</SUP> gear? Any comments from other caravan towers appreciated.

I'm not technically minded so can't answer your question, but I tow a similarly sized caravan with the 2009 2.0 tdci and never bother using sixth gear at all. Revs are normally around 2000 the way I drive. When driving without the van I always stay in 3rd in a 30 zone although I could use 4th for example. Oddly enough my fuel consumption is better if I use a gear lower than one would consider normal..........

I agree with Tony, I tend not to use 6th gear while towing I think it gives the clutch an easier time and the car responds better if I need to speed up a bit. It was my first year towing last year and I was being a bit cautious but I did get around 35mpg on longish runs over 150 miles. The van may be a bit more loaded this year, I will report what I get after the first run.

Hi, I use 6th gear, no need to change down on motorways even on inclines if anticipation is used.
I cannot see any damage/strain being put on the Engine, clutch or transmission doing this. Peak torque is around 1700Rpm anyway ( I think?! ).
Obviously, if Engine RPM were dropping a downchange would be in order.
I to use Cruise control.

hi, I tow a caravan (1455kg Coachman) with ease, but I very rarely use 6th gear, maybe downhill or a with a tailwind I might for a bit. Towing requires torque and 6th doesn't give enough while towing and I wouldn't risk damaging the engine, gearbox and clutch for the sake of a cog!

This may also be useful for you; My dad was recently told by turbo specialist to leave the engine ticking over for a few minutes after any heavy use such as towing. This allows the engine to cool and lubricate the turbo.

MG Metro Turbos used to have a light to tell you when to turn off, similar to Turbo timers used on some cars today which "time" the Ignition live, remove the key and it'll still be running.
Try explainingbasic mechanical principlesto the myMrs though .
I still cannot see what damage would occur from using sixth when Towing, each to their own I suppose.

Thanks for all your responses.
Just back from a trip from Perth to Aviemore and back, used mostly 5th gear with some 6th when the road was clear and i wanted to get a move on with a speed of 55 to 60 and mpg meter showed 26.5mpg on the way there. The return journey was almost all done in 5th at 50 to 55mph with a few downhill sections in 6th and mpg meter was 27.1. Don't know how you guys get 35mpg.

Well there could be a couple of reasons I get higher mpg, I guess your car might not be fully run in as its a 2010 mine is a 2004 with 70000 miles on it secondly I dont exceed 50 mph on a single carriage way even on a duel carriage way I stay around 55 mph. Pulling a big slab of caravan through the air takes a lot of power and even reducing a few miles per hour saves a lot.

Mine is a 2004 but only done 27k. I cant see any way of getting 35mpg with a van on the back, but am always open to suggestions ;-)

i towed an elldis typhoon last year on 21 separate breaks. The max weight of this van was only about 1180kg so only light, average about 30mpg. I have a new van now close to the cars max 1500 limit so the mpg is a little bit less.

50MPH is the limit on a Single carriageway when Towing anyway, so glad to hear you dont exceed any limits!
Lowest I've achieved was 23!!! that was on a run to Devon, never dropped below 60MPH, ( Traffic allowing ) and cruising at 65(ish) in 6th.
Over that Journey, I would of been at the site, checked in, setup and a couple of beers ahead of you (but needing to visit the Fuel station! )
