Steering Assist Fault - Electrical?

Hi there,
I have owned a 57 plate CMAX 1.6TDCi (DPF) for almost a year, its only recently that I have had issue with it!
I have the power steering assist fault light on with no power steering at all - this seems to be electrical to me as the fault light isn't always on, given that it was fine til I washed the car... And when the fault came, it was intermittent in both steering and fault. I have removed the headlight, checked the fluid level and have checked the connectors for corrosion - nothing, so liberally applied water displacer and contact cleaner. There is no noise from the pump, and I have tried multimeter testing the main plug with black and red wires but have no current whatsoever (waiting on a second multimeter in case that is the issue)
A few months ago I did have the same issue when a boost pipe split, right above the alternator... hence some cleaning up was required after some muck went over the alternator and then I had no further problems. I'm wondering if the alternator is causing this issue, car drives fine otherwise. I have also had my computer do a fault scan with FORscan, and it came up with the following faults - B1318 Battery Voltage Low & C1900 Steering VAPS II Circuit Loop Short To Ground

I don't know when these faults were logged, only that they were - I just wonder if either of these could pinpoint to the steering issue for sure, I need somewhere to look! Sorry for the long winded spiel, single car family so really need it on the road.
Many thanks for any help/advice you can give me.
