Hi there,
I have recently purchased a C-Max which is fitted with 205/50 R17
wheels/Tyres and came without a spare (space Saver) but with a repair kit.
Without going into details, I had a bad puncture and the reapir kit was
a waste of time! I am looking to buy a Space Saver!
Ford info was also a waste of time. I see from the handbook that the
Saver size (for ALL vehicles - and presumably they mean 16 and 17 inch
wheels)
is T125/85R 162. These numbers do not seem to indicate a wheel size?

May I ask anyone:-
Are there different size tyres of this spec to fit 16 and 17 inch wheels?
If not and the wheel is 16 inch, can I put it (temporarily!) on an axle
with my other 17 inch wheel? I do not understand the spec numbers and
am wondering whether the tyre walls are larger to accomodate the 1 inch
reduction in wheel size?

Or am I being very ignorant ??

The most important figure in all wheel /tyre sizes is the rolling circumference and diameter which is probably just about the same for all. If Ford specify the same space saver for all then this figure is not significantly differnt what ever the tyre size

In your 205/50 R17
The 205 is the width of the tyre in mm
the 50 is the height of the tyre (above the beads) as a %age of the tyre width and the
17 is the size of the wheel in inches (mixed units I know but they are starting to put the wheel size in mm as well)

On ours the tyres are 205/55 R 16
The extra %age of the width do just about make up the difference in the wheel size

For the T125/85R162
I presume that the tyre is 125mm wide with the T indicating tempory use
the 85 indicating that the height above the bead is 85% of 125 and
that the size is 16.2 inches without the decimal moint (or it may be that as spacesavers were mainly a european idea that the 162 is a dimension in cm

You could perhaps e mail Michelin direct and ask their tyre technical people for an explanation

Hi Richard, Thanks very much for the informative reply! Using your info and doing the sums, the 16" "spare" gives a total diameter almost the same as the roadwheel. Thanks again - Have a good week - Steve.

To take this a bit further I managed to get a copy of the Continental Car Tyre Technical Data Book which gives the following dimensions

195/65V16 - Rolling Radius 290mm Rolling Circ 1935mm
205/55V16 - 291mm1930mm
205/50W17 -296mm 1945mm
225/40W18 299mm1945mm

The T in the "spacesaver" does mean Temporary use
T125/85R16 283mm 1894mm

note these spacesaver dimension are only for a 16" rim so I believe the 162 is actually 16.2 and that would give almost identical figures

What did you search for on ebay - the c-max i am buying does not have a spare wheel. I would like to get one in place of the "kit" that is currently there.
