I would suggest that you have a leak in the exhaust pipe, most probably from what you say in the flexible front pipe
You might want to try getting someone to hold a wrag tight into the end of the tailpipe and then have a feel along the pipe starting at the manifoldfor gas blowing out

Hello mate,

I had exactly the same issue and noticed it more when at a standstill,
took it to my independant mechanic who at first checked the exhausts and
found the centre box was corroded.

He suggested that that would not put fumes into the car and looked under
the bonnet to find my jet seals from number 1 were leaking which is a common fault on
these engines. Check what happened to this guy.

Mine has had the seals replaced and it had to be coned out as the carbon got into bank 1. It's now running without any leaks but just doesn't feel the same and before anything else went wrong the car was sold for about 500-700 less than I could have got for it but then again I purchased it 4 years ago for 4600 and sold it for 2000 so I'm not complaining. Defo won't buy another Ford Diesel.

I forgot to mention, the jets are right in front of you air intake hence fumes in the car especially when stationary.

Exhaust fumes and DIESEL fumes are not the same

As you can probably guess I'm not a mechanic, all I know are the juts seals leaked so you have a build up of carbon around the jets which gets hot and smokes, it's that smoke/fumes that come in from the air vents. Mine was fixed but runs like it's on 3 cyclinders hence now sold.
