Does anyone know what is the best one to buy, I dont mean by all the functions and features it has but simply by it knowing the road layout.
I have had a Garmin and now use a Navman and both of them do not know the difference between a roundabout or a junction. I used to live in Hull and I never had this trouble, but since moving to Derby I have been told instructions like ' Take the second exit on the roundabout' and I am at a major junction. This has happend loads of times and I know this to be a fault as my wife is originally from Derby and knows the area (you may say why do I need a sat nav then, but thats a different matter). I also have problems with it telling me to keep left then turn right when I can only turn right when in the right lane as its a right turn only and the left is straight on.

I have had a couple of Garmins and have been generally well pleased.
My latest 1690 I have to say has some suspect mapping and is not as clear as my previous model.
It does however have live google search which is excellent for finding places.

No mapping system is going to be 100% accurate, but as far as the ones I've used, it's got to be Tom Tom all the way. Even the entry level model is fantastic value and the maps have been very accurate for me. Incidentally, I have been up & down the Country as well as into Scotland with the Tom Tom.
Highly recommended.

Tom Tom for me and I use "Kate" the computer voice and she has never got me lost. It does help to have a general idea of you route as they do tend to work on straight lines.

I'm using the new Star Trek CP3O (or R2D2) voice in a ONEXL. I probably ought to get a map update sometime

I know this thread is a bit old but I would like to add my thought:
<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />
I have a TomTom Go300, I bought it when it first came out, and it's never let me down. My problem with the new TomTom Sat Nav is, there is no expansion slot so you are tied to the max limit of which ever model you have. If was going for another TomTom Sat Nav it would be the Tomtom Go730. Also a lot of the new Tomtom sat Nav runtime is not good, the TomTom Go730 spec is 5hrs.

I've got a good one now, surprisingly it's a mobile phone, a Nokia 5230 with OVI Maps free for life.
They'venow added a new function where you can inform them of changes like a 2-way street being changed to a one way street.
