Have owned my 2007 MK21.8 petrol Zetec for 5 months now and have been impressed with all aspects of the car except one very important issue, the MPG is the worst i have ever known in a car, i have owned many different makes and models over the years , have owned many Fords and all have given better MPG than the C max. I am a ex driving instructor so know how to drive to get the best out of a car, driving my C Max on admittedly a local short trip urban cycle i can only get 22/23 MPG and thats driving like a saint!! I found it amazing Fords can state over 29 MPG for urban driving. I have been to my local Ford Garage as even though the car has been running fine with no problems ( only done 16000 miles) i thought this Low MPG might be because of a fault, Garage checked it for any fault codes and all was fine. Service department basically said doing nothing but short journeys can give a MPG of low 20s! So much for Fords claim of 29 , i owned a v6 Ford cougar a fews back and used to get low 20s from that on short trips!!!! Its a shame i have now decided to sell the C Max as with petrol the price it is and going up all the time it is not a economical car , will change it for something more economical like a Jag!!!

Anyone looking for a Mk2 1.8 57 reg Zetec f/r parking sensors, sony 6 cd player, full service history, excellent condition, GREAT FUEL ECONOMY!

Your not the first to complain about mpg from the 1.8 petrol,there have been numerous posts about it.I experienced similar poor figures from my wifes previous car (escort ghia estate).Even though our Max normally does short trips it still gets 40+ mpg.
If you want a Jag,wait a few months as the XF is due a facelift & a new diesel (2.2) with claimed 52mpg (combined) & Co2 of under 150,Prices are about 29,000.It has stop/start & an 8 speed auto box plus all the usual XF interior goodys.

When you say you know how to get the best from a car what are you a retired grade 4/5 adi?

Have completed anything else ROADAR ADVANCED ? IAM Pass/ Special assement with eco driving?

Diamond (so called) advanced test? Cardington test?

I have not had alot of chance to test my cmax it did 39 mpg back from wales (in need of a major service) Since then I was averaging 45mpg with some town and a country driving attempting to get the best mpg poss. So I would say from my limited experience its good and I have been drive an s170 for 4.5 year which averaged about 28-31mpg.

I am driving a 60 plate mervia 1.7 cdti 130ps 6 speed and not matter how I try with a mixture of city and motorway this car is doing mid thirties? All I can think is it has only done 2k and needs to losen up. I would suggest that due to their higher bodies giving a higher wind resistance they will be less frugal than a normal hatchback /saloon but they are more practical.

Our C-max averages about 35 - 38mph on regular commuting in traffic driven carefully, and over 40 on a long run Although its not spectacular the volvoit replaced was only doing about 25mpg on a long run, so this a definate improvement. Overall I think the car is great. Pity the OP is getting disillusioned with it. Edited by: Reggie

We've had our 56 C Max 1.8 now with 35K on it almost two and a half years - I've been complaining about it since the day I bought it but to trade it in now will mean a lot of additional cost. Petrol consumtion has always been dreadful around town and remains consistently at 23 - 25 mpg. On a run there has been an improvement. Keep it under 60mph and I can just get 40 mpg - ( orignally 34 mpg when we first got it). I handle it like eggs ! It still remains a horrendous car and has had numerous problems many similar to those listed in the forum.Terrible road handling ,pulling to the left (certainly keeps you on your toes) - failed alternator replaced 280 - noisydrive belts replaced- several attemptsrequired to select reverse (clutch replace but still the same) -vibration noise from underside -persitant click noise when a passenger is in the front every time you change direction or hit a bump- whining noise when switching off off - battery failed and replacedwithin the vehicle warranty period ( except it was not covered by the warranty).The list goes on - its been back to thedealer and their finest master mechanic numerous times (including being towed in) but unfortunately I'mstill stuck with it. I havehada Fiesta , Sierra,Escort, Mondeo and KA (I still have and like theoriginal KA apart from the corrosion and suspension!) but never again will I part with my hard earned cash for a nearly new Ford.They have to get their act together and produce a vehicle which has good build quality, reliability, acceptable fuel consumption and reasonableservice costs. Wake up Ford - I'm not alone !

Oh dear!
There I am, waiting to collect my 1.8 petrol on Saturday, and reading all these gloomy tales. I am getting it to save on running costs, having enjoyed a Lexus RX300 for the last few years. The Lexus was about two and a half years old, and almost half-price at 25,000 miles, when we bought it in 2007. Almost 40k later, the 260 road tax and 26mpg seemed a bit too much, plus the pending new tyres at 160 a corner, though the servicing was always very reasonable. And the dealer service truly fantastic - the surveys aren't exaggerating:- "New wiper blade, Sir? Certainly. Please enjoy this coffee while we fit it for you. Would you like car washed and vacuumed too?"
The C-Max I'm buying displayed 31.6 mpg average on the computer when I test drove it. A rash assumption, maybe, but the trip meter had exactly the same last 4 digits as the speedo, so I have a hunch it has never been reset! Whether it will be showing the average of the entire 26,000 miles, or a lesser figure - perhaps the last 5000 only? - maybe an expert here can answer. But not amazing, is it?
Am hoping my motorway cruises will boost this considerably, and maybe it needs a good thrashing if it has been used for short commutes. I have a hunch it needs a longer 5th, or better, a 6th gear. It was showing well over 3,000 rpm at 70 mph. Does anyone know the official mph/1000rpm, please?
Certainly, official 'combined' figures are no guide, especially those from the last few years, where cars are tweaked to hit 119gm of CO2 or whatever. I can get over 30mpg from my 272bhp Merc on a clear run, where it has a 7 speed automatic, which you wouldn't think was a recipe for thrift! Ironically, though the Lexus official combined figure is 23.2, I always bettered that, calculating the actual usage, not just relying on the computer readout. However, the C-Max figure of 39.8 is now my target!
Here's hoping... I'll let you know after a few thousand miles.

I can confirm that my fuel consumption for local runs is around 25mpg. Driven "Boy Racer" style this would reduce to around or less than20mpg if your lucky. On a recent trip to South Wales down the M4 Easter Weekend I got 36mpg on the way there (bad hold up near Swindon) and 39mpg on the way back (heavy traffic but kept moving) I did 70-75 mph where possible but used the right foot as if I was walking on eggs. Its a shame they are a nice car very comfortable drive, hold the road well but mpg figure are bad when compared with the competition. I have had mine just over 4 years (55,000 miles now)got it when I retired after 36 years of company cars. My last two being diesel Audi A4's. Nice cars fantastic fuel consumption on long motorway runs but not so good locally but still better than the CMax plus someone else was paying for the diesel. I got the CMax because at retirement age getting in and out of some cars can be a struggle whereas the CMax you just step out. I am not in the market at present for a replacement mainly because I wouldn't know what to get that compares with all of the good points of the CMax but that gives good mpg. So I suppose that I will keep what I have until one of us dies, if its the car I will replace it if not I will keep the money in the bank.

Thanks, dodger. Maybe my target is just about achievable then, based on your experience.
The "getting in and out" was a factor for me too, though mainly for my father in his late 80's. I get in and out of the SLK for exercise![img]smileys/smiley2.gif[/img]
Plus, I wanted to do a direct swap price-wise with the Lexus, to feel I was saving money. A similar age diesel would have been 1500 to 2000 more.
